Christchurch Earthquake – New Zealand Winegrowers’ Update for Overseas Offices

On Tuesday 22 February at 12.51pm Christchurch was rocked by a major 6.3 earthquake in what Prime Minister John Key says “may well be New Zealand’s darkest day”. The people of Christchurch and the Canterbury region have undoubtedly suffered a heavy blow.

Philip Gregan, New Zealand Winegrowers’ CEO, was in Christchurch when the earthquake hit and can attest to the devastation caused. New Zealand Winegrowers’ thoughts and prayers go out to everybody affected in this natural disaster.

New Zealand Winegrowers have received numerous enquiries as to how the damage has impacted the New Zealand wine industry. After contacting a number of our members in Waipara Valley (58km north of Christchurch) and the Canterbury region it appears that the productive capacity is intact and there have been no reported injuries among members to date.

Taking into account the time of year and current available information, New Zealand Winegrowers expects there will be little impact on the production and shipping of wine. New Zealand Winegrowers has written to wineries outlining how they can help the people and businesses of Canterbury through this hard time.

For those that wish to donate to the Christchurch earthquake appeal New Zealand Winegrowers recommend contributions to be made online via www.redcross.org.nz/donate and www.salvationarmy.org.nz. New Zealand Winegrowers will also be collecting donations at forthcoming international events.

Hi,

As fellow grapegrowers we also urge Marlborough growers and wineries to donate locally to assist evacuees from Christchurch who are placing a severe strain on local resources. Bedding can be given to Sheets n Things and furniture (especially beds) is sought by the Blue Door. Pams, St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army require clothing for distribution to people who have been left with nothing

Crossroads is coordinating emergency accommodation and billeting as well as providing a drop in centre and meals for evacuees. Donations may be left at Crossroads 2 Redwood St and qualify for a 33-/- rebate. Crossroads also requires foodstuffs, cash donations and volunteers for Johns Kitchen. The need is urgent and real.

Attachment: Immigration Notice Feb 11.pdf

Notice to all Growers and Wineries

As a result of the earthquake in Christchurch, there may be delays in issuing visa extensions for foreign workers. There are likely to be workers within the wine industry affected by this. The Government accordingly has made an announcement regarding visa extension for affected workers (attached).

For the wine industry, issues around the extension of visas in Canterbury, Waipara and Marlborough are being coordinated by Claire Wilson of Wine Marlborough. If you have any concerns in regards to staff immigration status, please direct all enquiries to Claire@marlboroughjobs.co.nz. Claire will be summarizing these queries and dealing with Immigration NZ to get answers for the industry.

Staff who are wanting to leave the country, but who have their passports in Christchurch, must contact their country consulate for advice.

If your staff have applications under process, please email details to Claire@marlboroughjobs.co.nz; staff are able to continue work for the time being.

NATHAN & ELLEN

Our family sends prayers and hope in this time of severe devastation. We are truly heart broken for the turmoil that has been thrust upon you.

If I could ask for a moment of your time though…..

I am Nathan Billings’ Uncle and am trying to get information about how he and his girlfriend Ellen are doing. We have not heard from Nathan since the quake and would just like to know how the two of them are doing.

All we know is that Nathan and Ellen have been working with the vineyards around the Christchurch area. I apologize, but we don’t know which one of the vineyards they are working at, nor do we have any emergency contact information for them.

If by chance you have seen Nathan and Ellen, can you please tell him to contact his father? To say the least we are a bit worried.

Thank you for your help with this.

Sincerely
Dave Billings
