New Zealand Winegrowers is proud to launch the 2017 New Zealand Wine Sommelier Scholarship for Australian sommeliers, providing passionate wine ambassadors the opportunity to take part in a memorable wine experience across the ditch.
About the scholarship
Created in association with Sommeliers Australia, the successful applicants will engage with and learn from some of the greatest minds in the business while sampling hundreds of benchmark wines from New Zealand and the rest of the world on an intensive programme of up to 11 days incorporating flagship events on the national calendar. Two Sommits will be held in 2017, one in Auckland and one in Wairarapa. Successful applicants will attend one of the Sommits and a combination of the additional events.
The Sommit - Auckland
The Sommit, Auckland. The Sommit is a one and a half day event, attended exclusively by sommeliers, and targeted exclusively to their interests. Hosted on Waiheke Island and in Auckland city the event will be a celebration of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine, with particular emphasis on the facets that resonate with the sommelier community. Cameron Douglas MS and Stephen Wong MW will provide a New Zealand sommelier voice at the event.
The Sommit - Wairarapa
The Sommit, Wairarapa. The Sommit is a one and a half day event, attended exclusively by sommeliers, and targeted exclusively to their interests. Hosted in Martinborough and the Wairarapa region the event will be a celebration of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine, with particular emphasis on the facets that resonate with the sommelier community. Aromatics Symposium (Nelson)
A series of masterclasses, discussions and tastings set amongst the beautiful coastal surrounds of New Zealand's sunshine capital, Nelson, designed to inform and inspire guests on Aromatic varieties in New Zealand. Content leaders include Nick Nobilo, Vinoptima on Gewürztraminer, Dr Andrew Hedley, Framingham Wines on Riesling, Dom Maxwell, Greystone Wines on Pinot Gris, and Simon Nunns, Coopers Creek on “Alternative” Varieties.

Classics Reds Symposium - Syrah, Cabernets & Merlot (Hawke’s Bay)
A captivating and thought-provoking programme, showcasing ‘The Classic' red wines of New Zealand, with the objective of educating, informing and building relationships in a memorable and entertaining experience. The interactive sessions will be held throughout the region and feature international tastings at renowned winery locations, panel discussions, keynote speakers, culture, entertainment, relaxed tastings and opportunities to mix and mingle with the winemakers while enjoying exquisite cuisine in stunning settings.
