Whilst Bordeaux varieties and Syrah dominate the production of full-bodied reds in New Zealand, there is also a small but increasing number of other varieties succeeding beyond these. Sangiovese, Dolcetto and Montepulciano are planted throughout New Zealand and are doing particularly well in Matakana & Northland. There are also some exciting examples of Zinfandel & Tempranillo, primarily within the key red wine producing region of Hawke’s Bay.
