Akarua was established in 1996. Located in the prestigious Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago, the 50 hectare single estate vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.
Matt Connell the winemaker, and his team, are focused on managing the quality of fruit grown in our vineyard through to winemaking in our own on-site winery enabling us to have complete control from vineyard through to bottle.
The Akarua philosophy is to allow the purity of Bannockburn fruit and the unique Akarua terroir to show through in every bottle through absolute attention to detail.
Akarua is located in the unique environment of Central Otago. An area of rocky peaks, barren wilderness and beautiful lakes, this part of New Zealand is world renowned for its majestic scenery and outdoor adventure opportunities. The Central Otago climate is harsh and unforgiving but is beneficial to wine grape growing in that the sunny and hot summer season with its low rainfall is sharply contrasted by the cold clear winters.
