In 1980 founder Clive Paton planted his first vines, including the now legendary ‘gum-boot’ clone of pinot, on a stony 5ha Martinborough paddock. Thirty years on, US wine guru Robert Parker notes “When I asked winemakers to name NZ’s greatest producers, one name kept coming up: Ata Rangi, meaning 'new beginning'." Despite its success, which includes the flagship Pinot Noir being conferred with a Grand Cru, “Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa” honour, Ata Rangi remains proudly family owned and managed. Talented winemaker Helen Masters today crafts the range of exceptional wines, allowing Clive more time for his extensive conservation
