Villa Maria is New Zealand’s Most Awarded Winery. Established in 1961 by founder and owner Sir George Fistonich, Villa Maria is dedicated to the pursuit of making quality New Zealand wine, enjoyed by wine drinkers around the world.
As any sustainable business has to be, Villa Maria is passionate about the development and happiness of their staff; as well as the people of the surrounding community. We have been an equal opportunity employer for many years, in the 1960s becoming one of the first New Zealand wine companies to employ female wine sales representatives. Villa Maria Estate has maintained a long standing relationship with the people of Mangere, the suburb in which its Auckland Winery is located. We contributed to the Mangere Heritage Trail working group and currently partner with the local community and the Makaurau Marae in… Continue reading →
Villa Maria has been working on organic viticulture since 2000, and in 2007 achieved the internationally recognised BioGro Organic Certification for a 21 hectare block at the Joseph Soler vineyard. In 2009, Villa Maria was the first major New Zealand wine company to achieve full BioGro organic certification from the vineyard through winemaking & bottling to the export warehouse. In 2010 the company released its first organically certified wines. It was thrilling when the Villa Maria Cellar Selection Hawkes Bay Organic Merlot 2009 was awarded a Gold medal at the New Zealand International Wine Show 2010, testament to the fact that… Continue reading →

Around 500 sheep graze the vines over winter at our Joseph Soler Vineyard in Hawkes Bay, eating the weeds and providing natural (and free!) fertiliser. They then return again in summer for… Continue reading →
Energy is an area of particular focus for Villa Maria. We have a long history of minimising power usage, pioneering heat recovery systems at our Marlborough winery in the late 1990’s which are now also used in our Auckland Winery. These systems take waste heat from the refrigeration plant and store it for use in winemaking: warming grape juice prior to and during fermentation, heating hot water tanks, and warming the wine before it’s bottled. These heat recovery plants significantly reduce total energy consumption. Running significant operations in two different parts of the country is an energy-intensive exercise. So Villa… Continue reading →
100% family and New Zealand owned wine producer Villa Maria began the process of embedding sustainable practices from vine to bottle many years ago – long before the topic became top of mind for consumers. In 2012, our long-standing efforts in the field were rewarded by government and industry organisations when the company received the prestigious Supreme Green Ribbon Award at Parliament for its contribution to protecting the environment as well as being named New Zealands most sustainable business winning the supreme prize at the New Zealand Sustainable Business Network Awards. As a family business, Villa Maria is especially passionate… Continue reading →
