Yealands Family Wines
Established in 2008, Yealands Family Wines was always destined to be a story of thinking differently.
Thinking differently is what we do at Yealands. Crafting award-winning wines in harmony with nature has seen us lead the world in sustainable winegrowing. But most importantly, it means great tasting wines which don’t cost the earth.
Think Boldly, Tread Lightly and never say it can’t be done.
Here at Yealands Family Wines, we aim to leave the land better than we found it. Hence, our motto – Think Boldly, Tread Lightly. We achieve this through a wide range of initiatives and on-going projects: • Over 25 wetlands have been established and developed at the Seaview Vineyard to boost flora and fauna diversity. As a result, Royal Spoonbills, Black Swans, Teal Ducks, White Herons, Banded Dotterels and Pied Stilts all now choose to make our wetlands their home. • Over 175,000 native shrubs and flaxes have been planted during the past five years. These have successfully attracted the… Continue reading →
Each year, a rigorous independent external audit reviews our ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions. These gases, which include carbon dioxide (CO2), are responsible for detrimentally affecting air quality and damaging our environmental eco-systems, including a global temperature increase. Overseen by Landcare New Zealand, one of the eight Crown Research Institutes, our carboNZero Cert TM accreditation measures the exact carbon footprint of our product lifecycle from “cradle to grave”. This means that our dry good manufacturing, production, shipping and disposal of the empty bottle are all taken into account. All unavoidable emissions, such as the production of glass bottles, freight to market and… Continue reading →
Wine production is an energy intensive business, as the wine needs to be warmed (prior to fermentation and bottling) and cooled (for storage and stabilisation). Our extensive range of energy efficiency initiatives to reduce emissions, include: • The adoption of SMART technology, such as heat recovery units, variable speed drives, refrigeration economisers, evaporative condensers, lighting sensor monitors and energy saving monitors. In addition, all tanks are housed within a fully insulated building, enabling Yealands Family Wines to become four times more energy efficient than the industry average. • The utilisation of renewable energy sources, which incorporate solar, wind and grape… Continue reading →
Peter’s trademark “can do” attitude is the stuff of legend. Happiest working the land at the controls of a bulldozer or digger, Peter has a proven track record of making ambitious pioneering and innovative plans come to fruition. His many and varied successes have been recently chronicled in a book – A Bloke For All Seasons. Peter has developed seven of his own vineyard sites in Marlborough, plus several others under contract for other companies. Whilst the majority of the vineyard developments were planted with New Zealand’s world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc vines, Peter was one of the first in Marlborough to… Continue reading →
Our miniature Babydoll sheep have received a lot of attention since I first introduced them to the country a couple of years back. Introduced to help reduce our diesel emissions by eliminating mowing, they continue to do well with stock numbers reaching in excess of 1,500. To eliminate all mowing from the vineyard, I estimate that we need about 10,000, so we are still a couple of years off. Recently I became aware of a small breed of Kunekune pig that eats vegetation and doesn’t dig up the ground like other breeds. It is still very early days, but initial… Continue reading →
