Growing the future of the New Zealand wine industry.
2018 marks the thirteenth year of the Bayer Young Viticulturist of the Year Competition. It is a fantastic opportunity for Young Vits (30 yrs or under) to upskill, grow in confidence and widen their network. It is a tough competition testing all aspects of vineyard management making it a very prestigious title to win. All those who enter find it a very rewarding experience, as they stretch themselves as well as widen their network and start to make a name for themselves within the industry.
The competition continues to grow and there are now six regional competitions, culminating in a national final which is held in conjunction with Bragato. See here for dates of 2018 regional competitions.
The contestants undergo a mix of practical and theoretical questions which include pruning, netting, machinery, pests and diseases, budgeting, nutrition, wine knowledge, trellising and an interview. They go head to head in the BioStart Hortisports race, a quick fire buzzer round and also give a speech at the awards dinner.
Education Days will run around the country during May to help prepare the contestants for the competition. See here for dates.
The competition is run entirely on the generosity of sponsors who not only support the competition financially, but also with their time and expertise. A huge thank you to all these sponsors.
