Young Winemaker of the Year

This industry wide contest encourages talented young winemakers to hone their skills and raise the bar within the industry to grow the reputation and quality of premium New Zealand wine


The Tonnellerie de Mercurey New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year Competition is an annual Wine Marlborough event designed to stimulate and excite the next generation of winemakers in New Zealand. Our vision is to have every eligible, under 30 year old working professional New Zealander to compete for the ultimate prize, the 2018 New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year. Details are outlined below about who can enter.

SOUTH ISLAND

  • Education date: Tuesday 5th June, 5-7pm Cartel Bar Marlborough (RSVP to georgie@wine-marlborough.co.nz)
  • South Island Competition: Friday 20th July, Marlborough

NORTH ISLAND

  • North Island Competition: Friday 27th July, Hawkes Bay
  • Applications close, Friday 29th June 2018

NATIONAL FINALS

  • Applications close, Friday 29th June 2018
  • National Competition Final: Monday 20th August, Auckland
  • National Final Award Announcement: Monday 20th August, Auckland

WHO CAN ENTER?

  • This competition is only open to current New Zealand and Australian residents (due to Australian’s reciprocal work and residency status).
  •  Applicants must be 30 years of age or younger at the 31st December 2018.
  •  Applicants must have a minimum of 2 previous harvests or 2 years’ experience in a wine production role in New Zealand.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  •  Applications must be endorsed by your employer, allowing time away from work for the competition judging, prize giving and media events as required. This endorsement should come in the form of a short letter or email and convey to the organisers that your employer has confidence in your ability and capability, and is willing for you to represent their company in this event. Furthermore, it should convey that you will be supported in the event of a requirement to attend the national final if selected.
  •  Applications close Friday 29th June. Your application will be screened and you will be informed as to whether you have been selected to participate in the judged challenges by the organising committee up to two weeks prior to the event.
