Mihi Whakatau

The New Zealand Wine, Altogether Unique – A Celebration will begin a mihi whakatau, a tradition that will enable us to recognise a localised Māori worldview, which will be done to acknowledge the place and people of Ngāi Tūāhuriri, and to bring a sense of holistic cultural safety and wellbeing to the event.

While the mihi whakatau will be performed in te reo Māori, there will be a broader English interpretation included.

  • Attendees will gather in the foyer outside the Limes room and wait to be invited to enter.
  • Once seated, a mana whenua (local) spokesperson will recite a karakia (incantation) to clear the way for the event to begin. Following this will be a speech of welcome.
  • Please ensure all mobile phones are turned off, nobody is eating and drinking once you enter the Limes room and take your seat, and everyone is respectfully listening to all that is occurring during the mihi whakatau and welcome.
