Meet the 2022 Finalists


We are excited to introduce you to the four contestants who will be competing in the National Final in November 2022

Alun Kilby
Alun Kilby - Marlborough, Marisco
Alun Kilby, 28, is Production Winemaker at Mariso.  He has worked in the NZ wine industry for 13 years from Auckland to Central Otago in all aspects of winemaking and in the vineyard. Alun enjoys the challenges that come with each vintage. He is passionate, driven, ambitious and committed to continuously improving the way we make wine and distribute it to the world.
Eliana Valle del Leal

Eliana del Valle Leal - Central Otago, Amisfield
Eliana Leal, 28, is Lab Technician at Amisfield. Originally from Argentina, she settled in NZ in 2018. Her wine career began in 2021 at Sacred Hill, Hawke’s Bay. She has a background in Biotechnology and fell in love with the chemistry and complexity of wine and began the Graduate Diploma in Oenology at EIT. She loves being in contact with the wine as well as being in the lab. 
Douw Grobler

Douw Grobler - Hawke's Bay, Trinity Hill
Douw Grobler, 29, and is Viticulturist at Trinity Hill Wines.  He has a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry & Animal Science) from Massey as well as a Bachelor of Viticulture & Wine Science from EIT.  His career began at Trinity Hill in 2016 where he’s worked in both vineyard and winery and is passionate about sustainability in both as well as incorporating organic principles into vineyards.
Georgia Mehlhopt

Georgia Mehlhopt - North Canterbury, Greystone
Georgia Mehlhopt, 27, is a Winery Assistant at Greystone. She completed a Bachelors of Laws but following a trip to France & Spain she immediately enrolled for the Postgrad Diploma of Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln. By 2020, Georgia was working at Amisfield, CO in the vineyard, lab and winery, before joining the Greystone team in 2022. She is also studying a Masters of Business.
