Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand Continuous Improvement is an industry driven initiative that has been developed to cement New Zealand’s position as the world leader in sustainability.

The idea was seeded by feedback from New Zealand grape growers and wineries who wanted to see Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand evolve and have the opportunity to be recognised for sustainability achievements over and above the baseline.

Keeping it simple: What is Continuous Improvement?

"Continuous Improvement" is a voluntary extension programme for Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand members. It offers a framework to support New Zealand grape growers and wineries in advancing and recognising their sustainability commitments and achievements, in whichever areas are most important and relevant to them. In simple terms, Continuous Improvement is a template for finding a better way of running a vineyard or winery.

Why has Continuous Improvement been developed?

Continuous Improvement has been developed to cement New Zealand’s position as the world leader in sustainability. 

We know the demand for authentic verifiable sustainability credentials is growing from both retailers and consumers of high value wine.  This is backed up by research. By taking the Continuous Improvement path New Zealand wineries and grape growers will create their own new sustainability stories above minimum standards. Focusing on verified examples of continuous improvement from Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand members will strengthen the New Zealand wine industry’s position as a sustainability leader.

How does Continuous Improvement work?

New Zealand Winegrowers has set aspirational industry goals (e.g. zero waste) for each pillar (biodiversity, soil, water, air, energy, plant protection, by-products, people, business), over and above baseline international (OIV) standards - which underpin the existing Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme.

Members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand can choose to focus on the area of sustainability that are most relevant to their particular situation (region, business size and resources) and work to extend their sustainability commitments in that area. Members will then set and achieve their own goals that align with the industry aspirational goals.

The programme will have a verification service that measures and certifies the work members undertake.
