The idea of empowering women in our industry was first mooted at New Zealand Winegrowers HQ last year, and has quickly grown from a suggestion, to a real initiative.
A key driver for establishing this group was the lack of women putting their names forward for the 2016 Board elections. It wasn’t expected given the large number of capable, commercially astute women involved in wine businesses who would add value to the industry as directors of our national association.
At around the same time as the NZW nominations, a survey by Meininger’s Wine Business International offered insights into the experience of women in the wine industry in a number of countries, including New Zealand. The survey was another impetus for establishing the Women in Wine initiative.
New Zealand Winegrowers is keen to support women in the industry and encourage more to take up roles of leadership and governance. One of the ways of doing that, is the Women in Wine initiative.
The purpose of the Women in Wine initiative is: “to promote and facilitate the participation and success of women in our industry”
The objectives are:
- Make Connections: Providing opportunities for women in the New Zealand wine industry to create valuable networks, share successes and ideas.
- Provide Information: Providing valuable information and resources to support and advance the careers of women in the wine industry.
- Driving Change: Encouraging wine industry commitment to the support and advancement of women’s careers.
The initiative is gaining momentum and the first networking function is booked for 29 August in Blenheim, kindly supported by Plant and Food Research.
