Mothballing workshop

Deciding whether to continue full vineyard operations, mothball a vineyard, or remove vines is a complex decision involving economic, operational, and site-specific considerations.

To support growers, Bragato Research Institute (BRI) has developed a new decision-making guide (below) and is hosting a free information session to discuss the resource, followed by a BBQ and opportunity to connect with others in the industry.

Representatives from BRI, the NZW Environment Team, consultant viticulturists, growers, Rural Support Trust, and Wine Marlborough will share their experience, knowledge, and available support.

All are welcome. Feel free to bring your partner, neighbour, or fellow grape grower. Please register by midday on 9 June for catering purposes.

Mothballing workshops

Deciding whether to mothball a vineyard or remove the vines is complex. The flowchart below outlines a generalised decision tree with yes/no branches followed by a model economic analysis. The purpose of this information is to provide members with a greater understanding of the potential considerations when making business decisions for your vineyard. Ultimately, it is up to individual businesses to decide what strategy to implement to suit specific business needs. It is always recommended to source expert financial, market and viticultural advice when making significant decisions on the future of your business's vineyard land.
